Advocacy & Partnerships

BORUT’s Advocacy and Partnerships work is the foundational layer upon which sustainable community development is built. We operate on the principle that lasting change for children and youth cannot be achieved in isolation; it requires transforming the very systems and structures that govern their lives. This thematic area focuses on creating an enabling environment where children’s rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled by influencing policy, shifting public attitudes, and fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration. It is the strategic work that amplifies the impact of all other interventions, ensuring they are supported by strong policies and collective action.

Our work in this area is multi-faceted. Through Policy Advocacy, we engage directly with ministries, local government departments, and agencies to champion the development, refinement, and implementation of child-centered legislation. We ensure that national policies on education, child protection, and health are not just words on paper but are aligned with Uganda’s commitments under frameworks like the National Development Plan IV (NDPIV) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Furthermore, we conduct Community Awareness campaigns through dialogues, school programs, and media engagements to sensitize communities on child protection, the importance of education, and gender equality, because an informed community is an empowered one. A key pillar of our strategy is building Strategic Partnerships with local CSOs, community-based organizations, schools, faith institutions, and international partners. These alliances allow us to share resources, scale up best practices, and avoid duplication of efforts, creating a unified front for child welfare. Finally, our Research and Documentation initiatives generate crucial, evidence-based data on the status of children, which we use to inform our advocacy, hold duty-bearers accountable, and demonstrate the tangible needs and outcomes of our programs .

The contribution of this work to community development is profound. By advocating for better policies, we help secure increased public investment in education and health, leading to improved public services for the entire community. Our community awareness efforts foster a culture of rights and collective responsibility, reducing incidents of child marriage, abuse, and school dropouts. Strategic partnerships build a resilient network of support that can respond to community shocks and stresses more effectively than any single organization could. This entire approach directly fuels the objectives of Uganda’s NDPIV by strengthening governance and building human capital, while simultaneously advancing SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). In essence, this thematic area builds the long-term, systemic infrastructure for a community that can nurture and protect its own children.
